Summer Jobs and Teenagers in 2009

By Seth Howard

At a certain point, teens start to want money to buy things like video games and cell phones. Some of them want money for dates and maybe want to start saving for a car. Every summer, a whole new group of teenagers start looking for their first job and this year is no different.

Unfortunately, the summer of 2009 might be a hard year for teens to find summer jobs. Many of them might also be looking at their parents urging as many families might need the extra money teenagers can bring in. Just like in years past when children worked on the farm to help out with the crops, many teens this year may have to find work to help pay the family bills.

This might put tremendous pressure on the system if the jobs for teen just aren't there in the volume that is needed. On one hand you might have more teens than ever looking for work and on the other hand you might have employers who have fewer than ever jobs available. If the economy stays in the doldrums where it is now, many companies are having trouble staying afloat and have no resources to create summer jobs.

Another reason teens want summer jobs is to try to get some job experience under their belt. If they can get their first jobs and learn some responsibility, this will help them get better jobs in the years to come. Of course there are the teens that do this mostly because of their parents urging and then there are those that are motivated and do it on their own.

This summer though, teens might need a job more for the money they can make than the experience they can get. More families than ever can use the extra side income that a teenager can make and the pressure for them to get a job might be intense. If the economy does not start to improve along with the job situation, this might be a very difficult summer for many. - 31376
