By John Robertson

Here are some steps to learning to drive. You may be nervous about learning to drive and you may be anxious to get your license and get on the road, so here is a quick guide to get you started and moving towards your goals to safely driving with a driving license.

There are a few basic steps involved with learning to drive. You will need a learning permit, the study guide for driving, your state's BMV or DMV website, an empty parking lot, a driver with a license, and practice. It can be stressful to learn to drive, just take it slow, and follow each of these steps.

The first step to starting driving is to contact your local DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles or BMV - Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You can do this by using any search engine to get the website. The website is where your specific requirements and regulations will be available, including where you can get your permit. Additionally, the site will advise what rules must be followed when you have your permit.

The BMV/DMV website usually provides you with information on your local state laws, locations, and the study guide that you can get from the office. This guide is important to study because even the most experienced drivers can have trouble with the written test, as not all the answers are obvious. Some states let you take the written test free until you pass it, check with your site to find out if this is the case.

Empty parking lots are the best place to start practicing driving. Busy cities can be hard to find an empty parking lot during the day; however, if you wait until night you can also practice your nighttime driving. Additionally, many areas have free parking lots during the weekends or over holidays. Parking lots give plenty of room to practice using the gas and brakes during turning and driving.

Driving on the road starts with safety checks, and may still be a very stressful event. To start, stick with roads where the speed limit is not over 35 mph. Avoid heavy traffic and highways until you are comfortable with driving on the smaller roads and used to watching for unexpected behavior by other drivers.

The final step is the best part of learning to drive. Take the test for your driver's license, when ready. You will take a written test, and a driving test.

Practicing and studying are the most important parts of learning to drive. In order to be safe on the road you will need to practice all your safety steps and understand the rules of the road. You will also have to be aware of defensive driving techniques. A few months practicing will assist you in getting your license and putting you on the road. - 31376
